Mayor for Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis, Anthony K.K Sam has hinted that a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system would be operationalized soon.
The mayor emphasised that the BRT is a response in their Urban Traffic Management plan meant to ease congestions in the city.
At a recent stakeholders meeting Mr K.K Sam disclosed that the Transport Ministry would be releasing a total of 20 intra-city buses for the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis to improve transportation. He adds that the assembly has been tasked to coin a name for these buses, just as it was done with this in Accra and Kumasi.
“Courtesy Minister of Transport, we are bringing twenty of these long busses to reduce vehicular traffic on our roads”, he said.
Hon. K.K Sam noted that a dedicated route needs to be created to facilitate movement of these buses. Routes considered are; Takoradi- Shama, and Takoradi- Agona Nkwanta.
“We want to create a corridor for the buses, so that they will start from Shama through Takoradi and then from Takoradi to Agona Nkwanta. We are lokking at Kwesimintsim and its environs”, the Mayor emphasized.
He however mentioned that road networks in the city would have to be improved.
“At the moment we cannot create these corridors because our roads are already narrowed. And creating the corridors calls for infrastructural investment”, he stressed.
He noted the $2 billion Synohydro deal would cater for massive road infrastructure including the PTC interchange and other link roads in the metro to improve transportation.
