Fisheries Management: Constitutional document drafted to improve women’s decision power

Civil Society Organisation, DAASGIFT Quality Foundation has drafted a constitutional document that would enforce the inclusion of women and other occupational groups dominated by women in fisheries management across the country.

The organization produced a working document to promote their activism on a STAR Ghana Funded project dubbed “Gender Equality in Fisheries Management and Decision making (GEFMAD)”, 2017-2018. The impact of which has necessitated an extension to other fishing communities in the Western Region, and with prospects of scaling it up to the national level.

Executive Director for the organization, Ms Gifty Baaba Asmah speaking at Regional Stakeholders’ Dialogue yesterday, indicated that the drafted constitutional document needs to be gazetted to make it very instrumental in for women’s participation in fisheries governance.

“…the drafted constitution must be gazetted for us to work with it. And if we don’t get the state backing, the gazetting cannot be done. Then we cannot work with the laws that we have made. So we should come together to see how we can work with this proposed Constitution to help save the deteriorating fishing industry”, she explained.

Chief fishermen from the various project communities,  registered their displeasure at the rate at which the Chinese fishermen are using illegal methods for fishing in  Ghanaian waters. According to them, the laws of the state has failed to deal with these persons.

In a response to the concerns by the fisher folks, Regional Budget Analyst Mr Daniel Ofosu Adjei [who represented the Regional Minister], indicated that these concerns are sensitive and that it would be forwarded to the Regional Minister and necessary measures would be put in place to address them.
