The only postal office in the Ahanata West Municipality have been shut for over four months. Residents who could no longer bear the frustration and inconveniences told Skyy News’ Portia Cudjoe the place have been consumed by weeds and wee smokers.
Some persons with mental illness have also found comfort at the abandoned post office.
“We hardly receive our ward’s school terminal report and as such could hardly tell how they are performing academically. We tried to arrange with their offices at Takoradi to get these letters routed through the post but to no avail” some residents said.
“We even have to travel from afar to the schools only to retrieve these terminal reports. And this is so not right for us”
They are therefore calling on government to intervene.
Head of Ghana Post in –charge of the Western Region, Theophilus Tei Ayanou responding to these concerns told Skyy News that agents assigned to man of the office in the municipality abandoned their post, an incident that has resulted into the temporal halt in operations there.
He explained that, the organization is much concerned about the situation and thus communicated same to the Ahanta west municipality for their attention and action.
“It is true that we are not operating for some time now due to the unannounced vacation by the postal agent who was operating the place, and from there when we realized that the postal agent was not operating again. We went to the Ahanta West municipal Assembly to inform them and also discuss with them to give us postal agent to manage the place and they agreed to give us a personnel to manage the place and also promised to renovate the facility so it will be conducive for operation” he said.
He therefore lamented that, the state is losing out in terms of revenue due to the shutdown. He is however hopeful that some staff would be assigned to the post so they could resume operations soon.
“Normally their letters come to the regional office, we send it to their individual boxes and put the letters in it. As at now we are rather suffering because we are delivering service but we are not able to collect fees from that service we are rendering because peoples have boxes there but they are not opening the boxes. So we will be very happy if this situation is resolved for us to start operating the post office at Agona Nkwanta” he noted.
