For over a period of time, mobile telecommunications giant MTN have had teething challenges with its mobile money services.
Not a day will pass without a report of an unsuspecting customer robbed of huge sums of money using the MTN mobile money platform.
Despite an unrelenting campaign against the activities of alleged fraudsters the challenge still persists.
Unfortunately, these fraudulent activities are sometimes committed with the connivance of MTN mobile money agents.
Against this backdrop MTN says it will blacklist any agent found acting contrary to rules of engagements governing the mobile money service.
Announcing the measure at a ceremony to reward MTN mobile money agents in Takoradi General Manager of Mobile Financial Services, Mr. Eli Hi revealed MTN is also working with the police service to come up with a ‘Criminal Record Review’ of agents.
This will require every agent to sign up therefore if there is any criminal record, “you cannot work as an agent”.
With assistance from the Central Bank, he said MTN will now have an agent registry where particulars of agents are stored in a database where it can be traced easily.
The maiden edition of MTN agents’ appreciation night was to recognize and appreciate agents in the Western and Central regions who despite the mounting cases of fraud are working diligently to protect the MTN brand.
Mr. Hi praised the agents for their role in making MTN the number one Mobile Banking provider in the country.
He noted that mobile money has transformed lives of people, saved the individual from cash handling, protect customers from fraud and robbery among other.
The agents, received items such as generator sets, television sets, rechargeable fans, solar lamps, motor cycle among others.
Some of the agents promised to fish out their colleagues who connive with fraudsters.
