The Mayor of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, Hon. Anthony K. K. Sam has disclosed that the Ministry of Works and Housing has promised to help the Assembly to construct storm drains in the metropolis.
The Mayor said, the storm drain shall be completed by the end of next year at Effiakuma, New Center, which will reduce panic during the rainy season.
“The ministry has promised to start the construction of storm drains at places like Effiakuma, and the New Center we recently constructed. We believe that by the close of next year, Sekondi Takoradi will have storm drains so that when it rains we won’t fear,” he told Host of the Jolly Breakfast Show, Samuel Kojo Brace, on Skyy Power FM today.
According to him, there are not enough equipment and machines to desilt the drainage systems so they are making arrangements to get the Ministry to provide them with the equipment they need.
Hon. K. K. Sam said some residents of the Metropolis block the drainage systems in order to put up houses, adding that others throw garbage in them which end up choking the gutters, hence, “the problems we go through when it rains.
“Some Sekondi-Takoradi residents are very troublesome, they know very well that certain places are designated for water to pass. However, they block it with mud to build their houses. Others also throw rubbish into the gutters which causes damages later on,” he said.
He therefore urged citizens to be ‘watch dogs’ and see to it that they report culprits caught in the act to the Police or the Sekondi- Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) for immediate action to help curb the situation.
