The Election Commission is gearing up for the conduct of the referendum by which a determination would be made for the creation of new regions in the country. Among several proposition for the creation of regions is the splitting of the Western Region into two.
In that regard, a limited voter registration and exhibition of the 2016 and 2018 register was undertaken in districts in the proposed region.
Director of the Electoral Commission in the Western Region, Steve Opoku Mensah disclosed to Skyy News that the commission is yet to receive a validated register for the conduct of the referendum come December 27, 2018. He however noted that the necessary logistics and personnel have been readied for the exercise.
“We are done with the registration and exhibition, the objections, deletions of ineligible names, and we are left with the IT department of the head office to come up with a final voters’ register, which we believe will come out very soon”, he confidently stated.
For years voter turnout in district level elections have been discouraging. Experts fear this might be the case for the referendum. Mr Opoku Mensah commenting on this issue urged voters to come out in their numbers in order to satisfy the 50 percent voter turnout required for the referendum.
